Importance of shade and our mission

Skin damage, including skin cancer, is the result of cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun.  UV damage begins to accumulate during childhood and adolescence and is associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life.  As students and staff are at school during times of peak UV radiation, schools play a major role in providing an environment that minimises overexposure and encourages long-term sun protective behaviours.

The Cancer Council shade competition has been running since 2012 to encourage schools to embed and promote SunSmart behaviours as part of the SunSmart schools program.

Our goal is to support and educate schools to ensure they have an adequate sun protection policy and shade is one part of that policy.  Providing adequate provision of shade within the school grounds for students and staff, particularly in areas of high use, such as popular play areas, where children eat their lunch, canteen, and outdoor lesson areas is a recommended strategy to protect school communities from exposure to UV radiation.

We would love to be able to give all schools funding for shade. If your school is desperate for shade, please get in touch with either Dept of Education, Catholic Education WA or AISWA to see if they are offering any funding.
