Services Membership – Western Australia

Criteria to join the SunSmart Service Program:

  • A UV Protection policy is implemented whenever the UV Index reaches 3 or above
  • All children and staff wear a broad brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat when outside
  • The use of SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen is required
  • UV protective clothing is required
  • Play experiences about UV protection are included in the education program
  • The UV protection policy is reflected in the planning of all outdoor events
  • Outdoor experiences are rescheduled, to minimise time outdoors when the UV Index is 8 and above
  • The service has sufficient shade or is working towards increasing shade in the outdoor playgrounds
  • The service reviews its UV protection policy regularly (at least once every two years)
  • SunSmart membership will be reassessed every three years to confirm UV protection practices

Follow these easy steps to renew or apply for SunSmart membership: 

  1. Check the SunSmart membership status of your service
  2. Review the UV Protection Best Practice Guidelines for Western Australian Early Childhood & OSHC Services
  3. Develop a UV protection policy, see sample policy templates for early childhood education and care (ECEC) or out of school hours care (OSHC)
  4. Register below to become a SunSmart Service
  5. SunSmart will review your application and policy

Once approved, you will be emailed an exclusive link to order your free hardcopy resources. Please note, new members receive a SunSmart sign at no extra charge.
Please note: An initial joining fee is payable upon approval as a new SunSmart member, see below.

ECEC / long day care / occasional care and similar: $80 (incl GST)
Family Day Care services: $80 (incl GST)
Out of school hours and vacation care services: $50 (incl GST)
Renewal of SunSmart membership: no charge
Replacement sign fee: large (600mm x 800mm) $55 (incl GST) or small (A3) $30 (incl GST)

Cancer Council WA requires SunSmart Services to review their UV protection policy every three years to maintain their SunSmart membership. Renewal of membership is free of charge to the original service management.
